Understanding Sciatica

Sciatica refers to pain that radiates along the path of the sciatic nerve, which branches from your lower back through your hips and buttocks and down each leg. Typically, sciatica affects only one side of your body. Sciatica most commonly occurs when a herniated disk, bone spur on the spine or narrowing of the spine (spinal stenosis) compresses part of the nerve. This causes inflammation, pain and often some numbness in the affected leg.

Common Symptoms

  • Pain that radiates from your lower back through your buttock and down the back of your leg
  • Pain that worsens with prolonged sitting
  • Tingling or numbness in the affected leg or foot
  • Muscle weakness in the affected leg or foot
  • A burning sensation down the leg

  • Piriformis syndrome

Professional advice for sciatica treatment and management

Doctor Why?

"Will my sciatica pain go away on its own, or do I need treatment?"

Doctor Y's Advice

While some mild cases of sciatica may resolve on their own with rest and conservative measures, professional treatment, especially physiotherapy, often significantly speeds up recovery and prevents recurrence. Waiting too long can sometimes lead to chronic pain or worsening nerve compression. Our approach at Dr. Y Physio focuses on identifying the root cause of your sciatica, whether it's a disc issue, spinal stenosis, or piriformis syndrome, and providing targeted treatments to decompress the nerve, reduce inflammation, and restore proper function. Early intervention is key to effective and lasting relief.
